Session Outline & Objectives:

On Oct 20 come Grind up what you know about Literacy at the Millenium Library’s brand new ‘IdeaMILL’ and remake creative literacy in your classroom.

We will be previewing and exploring the brand new ‘IdeaMILL’ Makerspace at the City of Winnipeg Millennium Library, exploring maker projects through literacy focused activities and challenging every student and teacher in province to a creative Literacy MakerJam using

The IdeaMILL. A makerspace is designed to encourage people of all ages to create, experiment, collaborate and innovate in a self-directed, hands-on learning environment. Makerspaces in libraries allow members of the library's community to gain access to tools, software and mentorship that can help take creative ideas and turn them into real products or prototypes.

◾3D Printers capable of producing customer-submitted designs and prototypes
◾Computers and resources for authoring and editing digital media
◾A crafting area with sewing machines, button makers and more
◾A classroom lab space, capable of hosting up to 16 learners on computers or 32 learners seated lecture-style
◾Two bookable sound recording booths
◾Photography and video creation equipment
◾...and more!

The ideaMILL will be open to customers of all ages, and will be accessible during Millennium Library's standard opening hours.

Literacy Activity.
How can Makerspaces be meaningfully integrated with Picture Books and Novels? Using the design thinking process, participants in this session will create character profiles inspired by picture books and novels. With this information participants will identify a problem, ideate solutions, and select an idea for prototyping. Consider Jeremy Kubica’s novel the ‘CS Detective’ (2016). Using computational thinking and coding, design a solution to solve the problems within the text! We will provide the picture books and novels for the process. However, if participants have a favourite classroom book or novel they are more than welcome to bring it as design inspiration.

Spread a little MakerJam Manitoba…
Join us for interdisciplinary MakerJam Challenge at the City of Winnipeg Millennium Library. October 20. During the session, a Maker Challenge will be given to the schools of Manitoba using Creatubbles is a safe global community for creators of all ages. It's a place where anyone can share anything creative they make, connect with like-minded creators and get inspired by what others are making. Just to give you an idea, there are people sharing their Minecraft worlds, music tracks, Lego builds, art work, videos, pieces of code, origami, 3D models - pretty much any type of creation you can imagine! In addition to that, teachers and parents use it to store and share their students' and children's creative projects around the world in a safe, online social network. Students and teachers will be encouraged to capture their thinking and design process and post to that ‘Picture Book or Novel’ focused Gallery.

The objective of the day is to introduce literacy focused Makerspace activities to educators and provide an opportunity to see the publically accessible IdeaMILL at the Millenium Library and book it over the course of the year to complete their literary maker creations. As stated above the IdeaMILL has bookable lab space and session for educators and is open to any family with a City of Winnipeg Library card.

Let’s inspire a generation of innovation in Manitoba!
