Listening to the Still, Small Voice

Topic for the April 22 session of "Torah for Everyone" series

MEETING ONLINE

Jewish stories about God are often full of drama -- the Holy One took us out of slavery in Egypt, and spoke to us at Mount Sinai amidst thunder and lightning...

Of course, these are metaphors, but where in Jewish tradition are encounters with the holy that may be closer to experiences we've had, or hope to have? Elijah, an ancient prophet running for his life, expected to find God in a mighty wind, or a fire. Yet it was only afterwards, in the quiet, that he encountered the sacred in a still, small voice.

What can we learn from this story? Have you had, or might you have, an experience like this? Does it have anything to do with God, the sacred, or Jewish tradition? We'll explore these questions together led by Rabbi Bridget Wynne in an open environment. All are welcome, and all questions are welcome.

About the Series

Are you curious about what's actually in the Torah, and whether it might be meaningful to you? While the Torah, and its continuation in the Hebrew Bible, are core texts of Jewish tradition, they can appear intimidating, irrelevant, boring, or even offensive.

Yet looked at from a sophisticated, adult perspective, rather than the literal understanding or children’s stories we may have experienced, these texts can be a rich source of wisdom for grappling with today’s real-life issues: ethics, family, work, politics, money, happiness …

Join us to experience the Torah and its continuation in the Hebrew Bible, plus relevant commentaries, in this twice-monthly class led by Rabbi Bridget Wynne in an open environment. Each session focuses on a specific portion of the text and relevant issues it brings up.

No prior experience or knowledge of Hebrew is required.

WHEN: We meet twice monthly on the second and fourth Wednesday of the month, 7:00-9:00pm, October-June, with some exceptions due to holidays.

WHERE: We meet online until we are again able to meet in person.

WHO: Newcomers of all ages and backgrounds are always welcome. You don't need to be Jewish to draw on Jewish wisdom. Please feel free to invite friends who may be interested.

HOW: The fee per session is $30.
