Event Details

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to listen to a museum, not just look at it?

During this course, we will visit several of London's most famous museums, exploring a variety of techniques for listening to these intriguing spaces. What happens when you focus on listening in a place dedicated to looking? What can you learn from what you hear? How do the sounds that you make yourself while in a museum affect your experience there? Join the Director of the Museum of Portable Sound, who will lead you on a journey of listening to museums, once a month for three months.

21 April, 11am – at Tate Modern
19 May, 11am – at the British Museum

We will meet for three monthly sessions, all 11am - 1pm.

Locations of class sessions are subject to change. A final schedule and the first set of readings will be emailed to participants on 1 March.

To help ensure an effective experience for participants, class size will be kept to a minimum. To secure your spot, please enroll early!

Save fees by paying in person – see ticket checkout for details.

Does my ticket get me into both remaining class sessions?

Yes, the course has a single fee which covers all monthly meetings. Select the first date from the dropdown and buy your tickets – one ticket gets you into the rest of the course!

Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?

Since the course requires long periods of silent listening, we ask that participants be above the age of 18.

How should I prepare for each session?

Be prepared to go for extended walks. The course involves a lot of walking through museums, so be prepared for this: wear comfortable shoes! We will make every effort to accomodate those who have mobility difficulty, however full participation in the class requires the ability to walk up and down stairs and stand for periods of time.

What should I bring into the event?

Please bring a bottle of water, comfortable shoes, paper, something to write/draw with to each of the three class sessions. Arrive early if you can, and make sure to be ready to participate: have a drink, use the toilet, and be ready to walk!

How can I contact the organizer with any questions?

Museum of Portable Sound

The Museum of Portable Sound is dedicated to the collection, preservation, and exhibition of cultural artifacts related to the history of sound. With a specific focus on portability, digital initiatives, and community engagement, we bring the culture of sound to the public one listener at a time.

Museum Director John Kannenberg (course instructor) is one of the world's leading experts on museum soundscapes. He has been listening to and recording the sounds of museums for nearly two decades. He has released several collections of museum sound recordings, including detailed album-length sound maps of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. He has lectured on the sonic experience of museums at the National Gallery in London, the University of Leicester School of Museum Studies, the University of Brighton, and the University of Michigan's Museum Studies Program. His writings about the sounds of museums have been published by Uniformagazine (Colin Sackett, Devon) and Museological Review (University of Leicester), and his creative research into the soundscapes of museums has been featured on
