Event description
Listen to the Mothers: Celebrating the heroes of the pandemic with Comedy, Music, & s'MOREs

About this event

Join Mama's Comfort Camp on the Saturday of Mother's Day weekend, for an outdoor celebration with all the safety precautions in place.

It's been a long pandemic year, and we've all been stressed out and lonely. Let's come together to listen to stories and songs. There will be two musical acts, one before and one after a comedy showcase of the "Motherhood is a Joke" program, in which mama comics showcase the art of "Rupunzeling": spinning our pandemic struggles into comedy gold.

This event is a fundraiser for the Motherhood is a Joke documentary film, a program of the Mama's Comfort Camp network (a project of the nonprofit Center for Transformative Action based in Ithaca NY) offering emotional and practical support to thousands of mothers around the world and across the street.

There will be music before and after the comedy showcase, as well as children's activities, delicious food and drink available for purchase, and lots of places to roast s'mores and hot dogs while enjoying the gorgeous scenery at Firelight Camps.

Date: Saturday, May 8, 2021.

Event timeline:

Gates open at 4pm

4:30 pm Singing workshop: Freeing Your Voice, with Elisa S. Keeler (more info below)

5:00 pm Music: Aria Dawn

6 pm: Comedy Showcase: Motherhood is a Joke The pandemic was hard on parents. If ever there were a time to heal ourselves through laughter, it is now. Eight mothers came together to learn the art of Rapunzeling: spinning our pandemic motherhood struggles into comedy gold.

Our comics are: Shira Evergreen, Kate Frazer, Holly Payne, Yael Saar, Tamiko Toland, and Lillian Yavits. Emcee: Firelight's own Emma Frisch. Special Guest: Eliza VanCort, Author of the upcoming book A Woman's Guide to Claiming Space

Also at 6 pm: kid activity HoopingPowers will teach an informal hoop dance class to distract young ears from the occasional colorful language in the comedy act.

8 pm: Concert Answer the Muse: A multifaceted, soul-affirming musical experience; more than a band, Answer the Muse moves and transforms you.

Content Notice: Some of the comedy acts may include some adult themes and the occasional F-Bomb, so we're providing a an activity for kids outside of earshot but within view of the comedy performance area. This is child entertainment, not childcare! Parents will still be responsible for their children during the comedy show.

This is a family event: children under 15 get pay-what-you-wish donation tickets, but still have to register for contact tracing reasons. The suggested donation for kid tickets is $5, but rest assured that setting the child ticket to be free is just fine (you know your family's situation best, there's no need to explain. Use the promo code UNDER15 to reveal the child ticket option at checkout. Please don't use this code for adult admission tickets.

Scholarship tickets: the pandemic has been hard on everyone. If this event resonates with you, we don't want money to be an obstacle. Due to covid restrictions, we are very limited in our ticket numbers, and we must first honor tickets already purchased for last year's canceled performance of Motherhood is a Joke. We will begin offering scholarship ticket registration on May 3. If you'd like to get on the scholarship ticket list please reach out to Yael Saar using FB messenger or email yael@mamascomfortcamp.org. You won't have to justify or explain your request for scholarship tickets, we hope you'll feel free to ask.

Food and drink

  • Mama Said Hand Pies will be selling their delectable savory creations
  • You can purchase Piggery hot dogs and Emma's famous S'mores kits, both of which you can roast over the fire on multiple small fire-pits within view of the performance stage.
  • You are welcome to bring your own picnic meal.
  • Full bar available on site. No outside alcoholic beverages can be brought on property--all alcoholic drinks must be purchased from the Firelight Camps bar.

The Listen to the Mothers Initiative is a long-term Mama's Comfort Camp program for amplifying the voices of mothers. We tell motherhood stories through a wide range of creative endeavors, including storytelling, poetry, songwriting, and visual arts. Creative and artistic expression is healing and transformative, empowering mothers to advocate for their needs, both personal and political.

Additional practical information:

  1. Please practice COVID safety. Wear masks and keep a safe social distance from people not in our household/pod. All attendees would need to share their contact information for the purpose of contact tracing.
  2. Parents should be supervising children at all times, especially when around the fire.
  3. This event will take place entirely outdoors, so you may want to bring blankets and lawn chairs, sunscreen, and bug spray.
  4. In case of rain: there are beautiful rain shelter tents right by the stage, so a little bit of rain should pose no problem. Rain date: If the forecast includes a high risk of thunderstorms we'll switch the celebration to Sunday, May 9 and email you.
  5. Please follow the Mama's Comfort Camp Facebook page for updates.

Media Release: the performances and other parts of the event will be filmed for use in our documentary film. Some footage may be included in trailers and online promotion. Audience members are not going to be prominently featured in the film or promotional content, but need to be aware that they might be seen briefly in them. Participation in the event constitutes an agreement to be filmed and be included in any Motherhood is a Joke materials.
