Chicago’s own DJ Jesse De La Pena returns to his acid jazz roots with “Vibrations” guest set at the Abbey Pub, Sunday, December 1, 2013.

Chicago’s own legendary DJ Jesse De La Pena returns to his acid jazz roots on Sunday, December 1 when he presents “Vibrations” at the Abbey Pub, 3420 W. Grace St. Chicago IL, 8:00 PM -12:00 AM. De La Pena will be sitting in for his former band, Liquid Soul, which hosts a residency at the Abbey on the first Sunday of each month. He will be featured behind the turntables with live musicians, dancers and painters performing throughout the evening. During the set’s first hour De La Pena will hold a listening session for his new mix CD, “Jazzy Vol. 1” and early attendees will receive a complimentary copy while supplies last.

 

“‘Vibrations’ is a throwback to a time when jazz music was all about the dance floor,” said De La Pena. “Back in the day I started spinning acid jazz at places like the Elbo Room as well as the Smart Bar and all these years later its great to present this set at the Abbey.” The night will feature past, present and future jazz.

 

 

De La Pena will also be joined by special guests Ron Hayes, who was Liquid Soul’s original trumpet man, DJ Joe Bryl, DJ 4bz and artist Solo RM.

 

De La Pena started spinning jazz inspired music in the early 90’s when Joe Shanahan of Cabaret Metro and The Smart Bar put together “Substrata” one of Chicago’s first acid jazz nights, at Smart Bar. He began working withthe club’s live house band, these improvisational jam sessions led to the formation of Liquid Soul, one of this country’s pioneering acid jazz bands. In 1994 he started the “The Blue Groove Lounge” a weekly Hip Hop Night at the Elbo Room, which featured him spinning original jazz and soul records sampled by various hip hop and dance producersearly in the night. That series ran for nine years, ending in 2003.

 

Known for his ability to seamlessly bridge different genres of music into a unique style of his own, De La Pena is Vocalo Radio’s music curator as well as host of its “Friday Night DJ Series.” He has been nominated “Best Club DJ” by numerous publications. In addition to spinning at clubs throughout the world he has been tour support for a diverse group of artist including A Tribe Called Quest, Arrested Development, Sting, Ben Harper, Bon Jovi, Bootsy Collins, Chaka Kahn, Common, Grand Master Flash, James Brown, Jamiroquai, Jennifer Lopez, John Legend, Liz Fair, Maceo Parker, Mos Def, Roy Ayers, Sugar Hill Gang, Talib Kweli, Three Doors Down, Tina Marie, War and Wyclef Jean.

 

 

 

Ron Haynes

 

Born and raised on the west side of Chicago, trumpet man Ron Haynes released his first solo CD, “Cool Work” in 1997. He was the horn section leader for comedian Bernie Mac’s “Mac Men” band and has worked with Chaka Khan, George Duke, Brian McKnight and Sheila E. Additionally, he formed his own horn section the “Chicago Storm Horns” which performed with the legendary Ohio Players. In August of 2012 he founded the Ron Haynes Game Changers.

 

DJ Joe Bryl

 

Co-owner and music director of the famed Chicago nightclub, Sonotheque, DJ Joe Bryl was the first DJ at Chicago’s famous Funky Buddha Lounge. He was one of the founding partners of the renowned venue, Hothouse which exposed Chicagoans to a wide range of left-field dance music ranging from rare groove, Latin, funk, Brazilian, steppers, African acid jazz and neo soul. He was named by the Chicago Tribune as the city’s “Most Interesting DJ” and has worked with Os Mutantes, Gilles Peterson, Seu Jorge and Thievery Corporation. He is the current resident and Maria’s Packaged Goods.

 

DJ 4bz (Forbes)

 

Originally from London, United Kingdom DJ 4BZ (Luke Finn) was first exposed to DJing in the late 80’s as a college in student in Manchester and moved to Chicago in the mid 90’s. He is one of the founders of the critically acclaimed Sunny Side Up parties. He also has spun at Smart Bar, Sonotheque, Green Dolphin Street and Subterranean.

 

 

Solo RM

 

A Chicago-based muralist, illustrator and designer. Defiant character work being his signature mark, his style evolves from a strong hip-hop background to a refined traditional approach and in recent years touching on the abstract and minimal.
