Lionel Popkin - Ruth Doesn't Live Here Anymore
Daily Event: 8:00 PM to 9:00 PM (EDT)
In Ruth Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, choreographer Lionel Popkin questions the acts of cultural sourcing, representation and transmission. loosely inspired by the career of Ruth St. Denis (1879–1968), who revolutionized the concert dance world, the piece serves as a way for Popkin, who is half Jewish and half Indian, to wrestle with his own uncertainties and awkwardness with representations of south Asia by using dance as a metaphor for the way we try to order our messy pasts. The work features an original score by Guy Klucevsek for accordion and string quartet performing live.
The tour of Ruth Doesn’t Live Here Anymore is made possible by a grant from Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation with support from the National Endowment for the Arts.
