Can a paid subscription/paywall business model work for local independent online news sites?
LION members Jay Senter, publisher of the Shawnee Mission Post in Kansas, and Mark Henderson, publisher of the Worcester Sun in Massachusetts, will lead a webinar discussing their paywall experiences and best practices from 2 to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14. It's free for LION members and only $15 for non-members.
Henderson's site launched from the beginning with a paywall model, offering no free content except for local obituaries. He'll talk about what the site has learned about readers' willingness to pay for news.
Senter's site switched to a paywall after seven years of a 100 percent advertising-supported model that offered readers local news for free. His goal was to sign up 1,000 subscribers in the first year of the paywall. He exceeded that number in just three months.
