Event description

Description

There is a wealth of linguistic data all over the internet and within our research that is just waiting to be explored. From blogs to recorded interviews and counselling sessions to books to speeches, language is everywhere and can provide great insights into cognition, communication, emotion, health, motivation, and more. Everyday, the technology to leverage this vital resource, in our research, gets better and better. Indeed, some researchers have taken it upon themselves to develop tools to easily automate and deeply analyze this data.

With generous sponsorship from the Latino Alcohol and Health Disparities Research (LAHDR) Center, UTEP Psychology welcomes Dr. Ryan Boyd (http://ryanb.cc/) from the University of Texas Austin's Language Lab (http://words.live/). Dr. Boyd is one of the folks that has worked diligently to create tools to broaden our abilities to understand the importance of language. For example, he helped develop the latest version of the Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (https://liwc.wpengine.com/) software for linguistic analysis. He has also developed numerous free tools for content coding analysis (http://riot.ryanb.cc/), meaning extraction (http://meh.ryanb.cc/), and more.

Dr. Boyd will be presenting his latest linguistic research on Thursday November 30th at the department's colloquium series. Then, on Friday December 1st, he will be leading a day long workshop on linguistic analysis. The goal of this workshop is to give faculty, graduate students, and advanced undergraduate students a hands on introduction to the tools and interpretation of linguistic analyses. So far, here are the topics that will be presented:

-Introduction to Automated Text Analysis

-Top-down Content Coding via Dictionaries

-Dyadic and Group linguistic analyses (Language Style Matching)

-Data-driven Thematic Analysis (i.e., Topic Modelling

-Open Vocabulary Analyses

-Word Embeddings

-In addition to other topics that will naturally come up during the workshop.

Participation in this workshop is free and open to UTEP faculty and students. Please come and see what linguistic analysis can do for you and your research.
