ABOUT KAREN GIBSON
Karen Gibson, a full time choir conductor and workshop leader, is a powerhouse of inspiration and energy. Recently nominated in the categories of Best Contribution to Gospel Music for the GMA’s and winner of the Wise Woman Awards 2015 (music), she conducts several choirs in the South-East of England.
She led one of her choirs, the Maria Fidelis Gospel Choir, to victory in the Songs of Praise Senior School Choir last year, and directed this same choir during an audience with the Pope as well as before the Queen, Prince Charles with Camilla and the Mayor of London. She also led another of her choirs, Southampton’s SINGIT!, to the finals of the BBC Choir of the Year Competition in 2010. Another school choir, St Anne's Catholic High School for Girls Gospel Choir has won the Enfield Mayoral Choral Competition 3 times consecutively. In addition to the choirs that Karen facilitates, she is the founder of the award-winning Kingdom Choir.
In 2014 Karen led the community choir 'Lewes Sings Gospel' to win the Songs of Praise Gospel Choir of the Year competition.
Karen’s experience is extensive. She has been involved with vocal groups and choirs for over 25 years, conducting gospel workshops all over the UK and Europe as well as Nigeria, Japan, Zimbabwe and the USA. She has been instrumental in drawing together and conducting some of the most prestigious large-scale choirs for a variety of gospel and community initiatives. These include The Queen's Jubilee, The Global Day of Prayer and Concert for Diana.
As well as several appearances on Songs of Praise, Karen’s TV work also includes Gareth Malone’s ‘Sing While You Work’ as a guest Gospel tutor, and also on his most recent show ‘The Naked Choir’ as one of a panel of specialist jurors.
Karen has recently been featured in the first ever book written about British Gospel Music. The book, entitled 'British Black Gospel' is written by Steve Alexander Smith and cites Karen as a pioneer of the sound of gospel in this country.
What sort of standard will the singing be, and what skills do I need?
We are aiming for the day to be genuinely accessible to everyone, including those who have never sung gospel before. All music is taught by ear and so no music-reading ability is necessary. If you are more experienced at gospel singing you are welcome to join us, though it will be an all-comers event.
Will lunch be provided?
Lunch is not provided, but included in the price will be tea, coffee and light refreshments throughout the day.
I would struggle to afford £15 but am very keen to join in the day. Is there any help available?
We have funds available for those in genuine need. Please contact the organiser in confidence.
Is there a charge for friends and family attending the final concert at 4pm?
The final concert is absolutely free!
Can under-18s join in the day?
Young people in school year 10 and above are welcome to attend the day, on condition that parental permission is given in writing. On booking, under-18s are asked to confirm their age; we will be in touch with the necessary consent forms in due course. For this occasion we have decided to set this as the lower age-limit for the day. However, if you know of children out there who would be keen to sing gospel, we would be happy to consider a future children's singing day.
Can I participate in just a part of the day?
We expect most participants to stay for the whole day; if you wish to participate for just part of the day then please attend from the start of session 1 and leave when you need to (rather than joining in later). There are no discounted rates for those attending part of the day.
