A Garden Celebration at the

Frank Lloyd Wright Turkel Home

Sunday, August 11, 2019 • 4-7 pm

Enjoy a summertime party at the beautiful Frank Lloyd Wright Turkel home and gardens to raise funds for People for Palmer Park’s "Light up the Cabin" campaign. Funds raised will help continue the restoration of Palmer Park's 1880s Historic Log Cabin and also support People for Palmer Park's ongoing efforts to revitalize and beautify this regional destination for all ages.

Silent Auction • Garden Party • Food & Wine

Enjoy wine, delicious locally-prepared food, and the magnificent gardens — plus tour a portion of the Turkel home. People for Palmer Park and our hosts, Norm Silk and Dale Morgan, owners of this treasured home and Blossoms Birmingham and Blossoms Detroit, welcome you. Just as they saved their historic home, they are now helping save the Palmer Park Log Cabin.

We will also have a fabulous silent auction with hand-crafted jewelry, artwork, gift certificates to restaurants, hotels, events and other special opportunities!

Famed vocalist Kathy Kosins, will create paintings while musician A. Spencer Barefieldour special DJ for the event, spins great jazz. Kathy's signed paintings will also be auctioned to help raise funds. Sevonty Restoration, experts in the repair and preservation of historic windows, will discuss the art of stained glass restoration that Andrea Sevonty used to restore our Log Cabin windows. And historian, author Greg Piazza will debut his new book about the Palmers.

The Log Cabin looks magical since the City of Detroit rebuilt the roof, foundation, porch, and exterior. Following that, People for Palmer Park crowdfunded the restoration of the stained glass windows (Sevonty Restorations) and the wooden Dutch front door (Darren Lasko of Detroit Millwork). The funds raised from last year's fundraiser helped to upgrade the electricity and purchase and install period-similar lighting fixtures throughout the cabin and exterior. We will soon be fixing and restoring the four sets of Victorian pocketdoors.

How your help will benefit Palmer Park

Your support will help People for Palmer Park, a 501(c)(3) charity, continue organizing recreational programs, beautification activities, and restoration work throughout the Park. In the Log Cabin, the ongoing restoration work will allow us to present more special events, concerts, art exhibits, educational gatherings, storytimes and children's activities, weddings, and celebrations of all kinds. Future projects include: restoring the stairway, floors and other beautiful woodwork throughout the cabin, fixing the plaster and repainting walls, restoring the kitchen and Mrs. Palmer's original Detroit Jewel Stove, rebuilding the chimney covers, installing a heating and cooling system, and more. PFPP is working hard to totally restore this legendary home, built in 1885 for Senator and Mrs. Palmer, who donated the land and the cabin to the City of Detroit as a public park for, as Senator Palmer stated "the good of everyone."

You will be sent a detailed map, address, parking directions and more details the week of the event. All tickets must be purchased in advance. For more info visit or contact or call Barbara Barefield, 313-891-2514.

People for Palmer Park

"A park for the good
of everyone."
~Senator Thomas W. Palmer

With the threat of park closings and budget cuts by the city, the People for Palmer Park (PFPP) arose from members of the community who love Palmer Park for the gem it was, is, and can be.

PFPP is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization and the official "Adopt-a-Park" Partner with the CIty of Detroit.

PFPP is a membership organization and new members and volunteers are necessary and welcome. Core members of the PFPP include residents and representatives from a variety of neighborhood and community organizations.

PFPP believes that with the collective energy, efforts, and talents of the people who use and love the park, it can be revitalized to its fullest potential and restored to what Senator Palmer envisioned when he donated the land for the park in the late 1800s: “a park for the good of everyone.” Palmer Park is comprised of 296 acres of lawns and historic woodlands, a public golf course, tennis courts, splash park, hiking and biking trails, Lake Frances, a historic log cabin, a community garden and more.

PFPP committed to the preservation, recreation, and revitalization of Palmer Park, for the good of all. Our vision is to create an urban oasis, regional destination, and daily recreation site that will promote an active and healthy community. Our guiding values include preservation of park resources; restoration and preservation of the park’s history; equal benefit and access to the park; creation of a safe park environment; responsiveness to park users and the community; timeliness in our actions; and collaboration and cooperation with city, community, and stakeholders.
