Enjoy a summertime party in the beautiful Frank Lloyd Wright Turkel home and gardens to raise funds for People for Palmer Park’s "Light up the Cabin" campaign. Funds raised will help update electricity in the cabin, restore original lighting fixtures, and other restoration work in Senator & Mrs. Palmer’s 1880s Historic Log Cabin, a unique and important Detroit landmark and cornerstone of Palmer Park. Funds will also support People for Palmer Park's ongoing efforts to revitalize and beautify Palmer Park.
Enjoy wine, delicious locally-prepared food, and the magnificent gardens — plus tour a portion of the Turkel home. People for Palmer Park welcomes you and thanks our hosts, Norm Silk and Dale Morgan, owners of this treasured home and Blossoms Birmingham and Blossoms Detroit. They saved their historic home, once neglected and foreclosed, and now they are helping save the Palmer Park Log Cabin.
We will also have a fabulous silent auction with hand-crafted jewelry, artwork, gift certificates to restaurants, hotels, events and other special opportunities!
Sevonty Restoration, experts in the repair and preservation of historic windows, will demonstrate and discuss the art of stained glass restoration that Andrea Sevonty used to restore our Log Cabin windows; historian, author Greg Piazza will debut his new book about the Palmers. Famed vocalist Kathy Kosins, will wear a different hat for this event and create paintings while she listens to great jazz that musician A. Spencer Barefield, our special DJ for the event, will program. Her paintings will be be auctioned to help raise funds for Palmer Park and she will personally sign them to the winners.
The Log Cabin looks magical since the City of Detroit has rebuilt the roof, foundation, porch, and exterior, and People for Palmer Park has restored all the stained glass windows (thanks to Andrea Sevonty Restorations), as well as the massive wooden Dutch front door (thanks to Darren Lasko of Detroit Millwork). However, we need to continue the restoration work by installing safe lighting and electricity (inside and outside), restoring the original light fixtures, and more so that the Log Cabin can be used more and more for special events, concerts, art exhibits, educational gatherings, storytimes and children's activities, weddings, and celebrations of all kinds. PFPP is working hard to totally restore this legendary home, built in 1885 for Senator and Mrs. Palmer, who donated the land and the cabin to the City of Detroit as a public park for, as Senator Palmer stated "the good of everyone."
You will be sent a map, address, parking directions and more details the week of the event.
