Description

Life at Sea: A Rare Book Voyage

Join us for an afternoon voyage into the Free Library of Philadelphia’s rare book collections. We’ll page through books about pirates printed in the 1600s and 1700s, look at children’s books about whales and sea monsters, and even study a Bible printed in Germantown in 1743 that was captured by pirates on the Atlantic Ocean before finding its way back to Philadelphia. In addition to studying all of these treasures, participants will receive a free Voyage Pass to visit the new exhibition American Voyager: Herman Melville at 200 at The Rosenbach, a museum and library just a short distance from Parkway Central. Pack your sea chest and prepare to embark on an epic journey into history!

Take history in the palm of your hand: turn pages, hold manuscripts, and handle artifacts with the Hands-on History series from the Free Library's Special Collections. Curiosity seekers of all ages are welcome! Registration is free, but required.
