Event description

Description

During this two day immersion workshop we will dig deep into the Liberating Structures repertoire. You will gain practical experience applying 15-20 Liberating Structures, hear stories from the field about novel applications of LS in a variety of domains, and begin to immediately level up your familiarity with a range of LS by combining them into purposeful strings.

Preparing you to liftoff where the workshop leaves off is our primary objective.

Location & Logistics:

8:30am to 4:30pm both days (lunch on your own)

Reidenback Hall, 2501 Harrison Street, Oakland, CA

Our meeting room at the First Congregational Church is convenient to BART (a 10 minute walk from 19th St), has ample parking, and great food/coffee options close by. The church focuses on building community relationships, social justice, and is led by lay people. A lovely fit with LS.

We have a limited number of scholarships available for those with a financial need. Please contact Fisher (fisher@back-loop.com) or Keith (keith@liberatingstructures.com) to inquire. *User Group Leaders* please inquire with Fisher or Keith for a special discount code.

For those traveling from out-of-town, we have a few Berkeley hotel recommendations (~15 min cab ride to venue):

At the heart of LS is a profoundly simple idea: That tiny shifts in the structure of your interactions can generate ceaselessly creative results. Shifting these micro-structural elements makes it possible to unleash a wider dynamic range of intelligence and imagination in yourself, your organization, and your community.

With a light touch, LS awaken wildly productive and wonderfully inventive self-organizing. Prepare for surprise as you begin to reliably generate novel results by including and engaging more people.

Two-Day Immersion Experience - Prepare to Get Wet!

Making waves around the world, Liberating Structures (LS) productively and playfully disrupt typical work patterns.

The 33+ Liberating Structures compose a repertoire of elegantly simple methods that make changes to in the way we organize. With subtle drama, LS alter the way results are generated without the need for expensive investments, complicated training, or changes in formal structure.

Similar to learning a new language, during the immersion workshop we substitute LS for conventional methods like presentations, facilitated discussions, brainstorming, and open discussions. We’ll bravely dive into the river with both feet accompanied by LS users who have years of practice in the field. You will experience individual LS then roll up your sleeves and prepare to use them in your next meeting, strategy session, community gathering, or workshop.

Level Up Your LS Repertoire

Join a diverse array of leaders who are putting the LS repertoire into practice. LS leaders, coaches and maestros will specify “how to” include and unleash every voice in shaping next steps. In addition to the 33 microstructures published in the LS book, up-and-coming LS will be featured: Talking with Pixies, Network Pattern Cards, MindMeld, GriefWalking, Mad Tea, and Positive Gossip. Plus, we will play seriously with riffs, twists, and LS punctuation emerging out of practice over the last few years.

Everyday Practice and Field Stories

When put into everyday practice, LS spark perpetual novelty and enduring adaptability. Field stories in multiple domains and a diverse array of topics will be shared. For example: merging/acquiring in business, flipping a classroom in a college, transforming higher education in a top university, innovating in scientific/technical research, reframing evaluation as developmental action research, planning strategically in software (without predicting or visioning), reinventing public service, and coordinating cross-boundary international development. Every participant with field experience will have opportunities to share their work.

Global, Boundary-Hopping, Hope-Brewing

LS users are spread across the planet and are making incredible gains in and across multiple domains. In a few of the cities where LS user groups are well established, something bigger than personal or organizational transformation is emerging. LS dissolve boundaries at home, in our workplace, and in our communities, making it possible to be more hopeful as we face tough challenges. At the workshop, we will brew more hope together and find colleagues who we can engage in taking on even more entangled, complex challenges.
