Description

This roundtable is part of a series of programmes presented by CLGdotTV in collaboration with local authority think-tank and membership organisation Local Government Intelligence Unit (LGiU).

Jonathan Carr-West, Chief Executive LGiU has said of local government that "at its heart [it] is simply the institutional manifestation of the principle that communities come together to self organise and to support each other.”

As elected representatives of their communities, councillors should be in a position to make a real impact on their local community. But are they?

The UK has a highly centralised system of government, no proper local taxation, and councils have to cope with Whitehall’s tendency to pass them all the difficult work.

So what difference can a councillor make and what makes a local politician effective? How can councillors and candidates build trust on the doorstep and in office? What other ways are there to make a difference locally by being an active citizen, volunteer, school governor etc and how can the council make formal connections with active citizens to make the places we live even better.

This roundtable will involve the participation of at least three local councillors not running in May’s local elections. Watch this space for further announcements.

LGiU works to strengthen local democracy by providing information, research and other services to over 200 councils, trade unions, universities and other organisations. The scope of the LGiU’s work is as broad as a local authority’s: from housing to social care; from education to local economic growth; from supporting councillors and promoting local democracy to delivering in house training. With eyes on the horizon - what do we want our communities to look like? How will public services meet people’s needs now and in the future - LGiU’s activity is firmly rooted in communities, councils, workplaces, schools and homes.
