About this Event

Welcome to Paragraph’s LGBTQ Writers Salon. Our goal is to provide a space for LGBTQ writers to meet, mingle, and discuss writing in an informal setting. Our salons start with an hour long roundtable discussion with a special guest followed by a mixer with wine and snacks. This month, author and professor Cris Beam will join us for a discussion on self-care as a writer, recounting her own experiences writing non-fiction and memoir. We will explore such topics as: How do you write about subjects you currently have relationships with? How do you maintain relative objectivity? How do you deal with the repercussions of writing about family and friends? How do you care for yourself as a queer writer?

Cris Beam is an author and professor in New York. She's the author of five books of both fiction and nonfiction, and looks at urban poverty, child welfare, lgbtq issues, empathy and madness. Her most recent book is I Feel You: The Surprising Power of Extreme Empathy (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2018).

Roundtable discussion will start at 6:30pm sharp, followed by a mixer at 8pm with free drinks (wine, seltzer, tea, coffee) and snacks. Our LGBTQ Writers Salon is informal, inclusive, and supportive in nature with the goal of building a long-term sustained community.

This event is 100% FREE and OPEN to all LGBTQ writers and allies.
