About this Event

LGBTQ, SOGIE?: Improving Outcomes for Youth In Care

Facilitator: Kameko Johnson-Styles, LGSW

Total CEU’s: 3

Across America as many as 1 in 5 youth in care identify as LGBTQ. They have more placements, are more likely to end up in a group home, and face poorer outcomes than their non-identifying peers. This presentation will provide a foundation understanding of the terms and concepts related to sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression (SOGIE); normative adolescent development; and the “coming out” process for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) youth. The engaging session will deconstruct stereotypes and myths about LGBTQ youth and address common reasons that LGBTQ youth are more likely to enter the foster care system. Participants will identify barriers to serving these youth and learn effective strategies for supporting the healthy development of youth regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
