The perfect introduction to self-defence, this 2 hour workshop covers basic techniques and is suitable for both beginners and those wanting to refresh their skills. Hosted at Leicestershire LGBTQ+ Centre, this session is a safe space for members of the community to build their confidence.

This workshop is free for participants, funded by Leicestershire LGBTQ+ Centre. Spaces are limited so please reserve your spot.

Time: 12.00-2.00pm (Arrive 10 minutes early).

Venue: Voluntary Action Leicestershire, 9 Newarke Street, LE1 5SN. Please access via the back gate on Chancery Street.


​About the session

Through hands-on practice, you will learn effective striking and self-defence moves, situational awareness and a greater understanding of the fight, flight and freeze responses. Our supportive and friendly environment ensures that every participant feels comfortable and empowered, regardless of fitness level or prior experience.

Course overview:

  • Effective striking techniques
  • Practice against focus pads and strike shields
  • Vulnerable areas of the body
  • Techniques for common types of attack such as strangleholds, chokes, bear hugs and grabs
  • Managing the common 'freeze' response to threat


About the instructor

Tamsin Davis is a certified self-defence instructor with a nationally accredited BTEC Level 3 in Self-Defence, and has completed trauma-informed teacher training with the Conscious Combat Club, the world's first provider of trauma-informed martial arts.


Her background is in martial arts as a qualified instructor with the British Taekwondo Council, and a 4th Dan black belt in taekwon-do; she also trains in kick boxing, jiu-jitsu and Russian Systema self-defence.


As well as teaching self-defence, she runs one of the only women's taekwon-do clubs in the country and teaches at this and various other classes each week. She is fully DBS-checked, first aid trained and holds public liability insurance for all her sessions.
