We will examine the current landscape of LGBTQ rights in Ukraine and the challenges of the Ukrainian LGBTQ community.

About this Event

In April 2019, Ukraine elected a new president, V. Zelensky, who announced early parliamentary elections in July 2019. In the panel discussion, we will examine the current landscape of LGBTQ rights in Ukraine and the challenges the Ukrainian LGBTQ community faces in obtaining equal rights.

Special guests of the panel discussion are the delegation from Parents’ Initiative TERGO, an organization that works with parents of LGBTQ persons in Ukraine.

The panel discussion is organized on the initiative of the NGO Proud Ukraine – the first LGBTQ association of queer Ukrainians in the USA in coordination with the Congressional LGBT Equality Caucus.

Moderator:

Marc Behrendt is the Director for Europe and Eurasia programs at Freedom House, with over 20 years of experience working in the Eurasia region in peacebuilding, governance and human rights.

Discussion panelists:

Olena Globa is the first head of the board and leader of the Parents initiative "Tergo" (Kyiv, Ukraine), the mother of Bogdan Hloba, the first openly gay activist who made his public cominh out of the rostrum of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine. In 2016, Olena Hloba was awarded by the Human Rights First and Human Rights Campaign with a prestigious human rights award for advancing human rights around the world.

Bogdan Globa is the president of the Ukrainian LGBT Association in the United States Proud Ukraine (New York, USA). Worked as an assistant to the chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Human Rights. Advocated anti-discrimination legislation and civil partnership in Ukraine. In 2016, he asked for political asylum in the United States through persecution by right-wing groups.

Svetlana Zemlyana is a public activist of "TERGO", a school principal in the Poltava region. She is engaged in the promotion and popularization of anti-bullying programs at secondary schools in Ukraine.

Proud Ukraine is an association of Ukrainian LGBT+ individuals living in the United States and Canada.
