Balancing the Needs of You, Me and Us: A Relationship Workshop that Respects All of Who We Are

A relationship workshop designed for adults who identify as QUEER/LGBTQIAP2S (in a relationship or not)

Communication ~ Connection ~ Appreciation ~ Understanding

  • Explore the definitions and impacts of trauma and oppression fatigue on our personal health and our relationships
  • Assess how your needs, background and personality influence your relationship dynamics
  • Explore the connections to personal self-care, personal values and relationship strength
  • Identify your relationship's strengths and areas for improvement
  • Identify the positives you bring to relationships and areas where you could improve
  • Learn how our bodies somatically respond when we are in fight, flight and flee mode and how to calm ourselves to be more effective communicators
  • Gain ideas on how to balance your and a/your partner's needs with the health of your relationship
  • Learn concrete strategies to improve respectful listening, arguing, apologizing, intimacy, and problem-solving
  • Come away with concrete tips to develop your own "Self-Care and Relationship Care Plans for the Socially Conscious"

For: This workshop is intended as a safe, affirming, sex-positive, non-judgmental, and accepting space for all gender, sexual, and romantic forms of expression, consenting adult activities, and relationships. People who can join this intention are welcome to register and participate. Facilitator: Irene Greene MSEd, 29+ years psychotherapist, relationship coach, activist and trainer. (See more info below.)

Format: This workshop blends lecture, humor, discussion and private personal/relationship time. Large group sharing is optional. There are no group exercises. Folders, worksheets, bibliography, handouts and pens are provided. Bring a water bottle and a bag lunch. Lunch is not provided. Bag lunches may be stored in the facility's refrigerator. Healthy snacks, coffee, tea and water will be available for stretch breaks.

Irene is affirming and inclusive of the fluidity and variety of sexual and gender expressions and relationships. She also adheres to a fundamental consciousness for how the layers of cultural and systematic oppression and trauma influence personal and inter-personal health.

Workshop Content Details:

Assess your relationship:

  • Your relationship’s strengths
  • Identify the areas needing improvement
  • Your own & your partner’s helpful and not so helpful patterns of communication
  • Satisfaction levels of each of your: emotional, social, self-care, family, physical, safety, sexual & relationship needs

Explore essential relationship dynamics:

  • Factors that foster healthy relationships and also nurture individuality
  • How trauma & oppression fatigue impact our personal & inter-personal health
  • Concepts of healthy relationship differentiation and boundaries
  • Co-dependent, inter-dependent & independent relationship dynamics
  • Discerning affectionate and sexual touch and connection
  • Why all of your and your partner’s feelings are important, including blame, anger, guilt, sadness, hurt, insecurity, anxiety, shame, jealousy & fear
  • How our minds, bodies & feelings somatically interact and impact us when we are calm verses when stressed or in conflict

Gain concrete tools to make changes to:

  • Increase your self-care, especially in the face of oppression, life's stressors, trauma and relationship problems
  • Deepen your emotional connection
  • Calm and sooth yourself when you are upset or angry
  • Learn how to talk and listen more intentionally
  • Increase partner compassion, understanding & appreciation
  • Argue and problem-solving more respectfully

Cost & Options to Register & Pay: Fee: $180/person. Adjusted Fee: $120/person. You may put 50% down to reserve your spot and pay the balance (via check or cash) on the day of the workshop. Reasonable payment plans are accepted and may be negotiated by contacting Irene.

Cancellation Policy: Registration cancellations made in writing and by 5pm fourteen days prior to the workshop will be fully reimbursed and returned a maximum of two week's post-workshop date. No refunds after that date.

Irene Greene MSEd: 29+ years as a psychotherapist, relationship coach, activist and trainer. In her private practice in Minneapolis, Irene offers individual and group counseling, relationship counseling (any configurations), uncoupling counseling, professional consultation, education and training. The majority of Irene's clients identify as queer, genderqueer, gender non-conforming, LGBTQ2SPIA, and or as poly and or kinky. Her specialty topics include: managing stress, anger, depression, shame and anxiety, increasing self-compassion, trauma healing, somatic mindfulness, communication, sexuality, gender and sexual identity, oppression fatigue, and self-care. Irene's current community involvement includes being the chair of the MN LGBT Therapist's Network, the professional organization in Minnesota for LGBTQ2SPIA mental health professionals, and a member of the North Star Health Collective, which offers free psychological first-aid training and support to street medics and community activists.

FAQs

Are there ID requirements or an age limit to enter the event? This workshop is for adults who identify as Queer, LGBTQIP2SA, and may or may not also identify as Kinky or Poly. *LGBTQIP2SA: Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Pansexual, Two-Spirit, Asexual. What are my transport, parking and accessibility options? The event is near a major bus line, has ample street parking, limited lot parking and a bike rack. The building does have a ramp to the entrance. It does not have an elevator.

What should I bring to the event? Please bring a water bottle and a bag lunch. A refrigerator is available. Wear comfortable clothing. Water, tea, coffee and healthy snacks will be provided for stretch breaks.

"LGBTQ2S+ Relationship with Kids Workshop: Balancing Everyone’s Needs" 9/9/17: Sat., from 9:00am to 4:30pm. Open to adults within all kinds of interpersonal relationships and family compositions. Address co-parenting, blended families, parenting with an "ex" in the picture, being the non-biological parent, fostering, adopting, polyamory.
