Event description
The emotional well-being of Wake County youth is a community defined priority, as we work to eradicate bullying and youth suicide.

About this Event

Research shows that LGBTQ+ youth are much more likely to experience stigma, bullying, and suicide. LGBTQ+ who feel unsupported and/or disconnected from support systems, contribute to the health disparities.

In that regard, Youth Thrive is pleased to invite you to the upcoming training: LGBTQ-Affirming Interactions & Practices with Youth.

This training, which will be facilitated by SHIFT NC (http://www.shiftnc.org/) is designed to introduce concepts, terminology and resources related to sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression. An overview of objectives is provided below:

1. Review basic terminology relevant to LGBTQ+ youth.

2. Increase comfort with validating and normalizing sexual and gender diversity in young people.

3. Review outdated language for allies to avoid.

4. Increase understanding of gender neutral pronouns.

5. Practice using LGBTQ+ affirming language and incorporating inclusive practices.

6. Identify steps for becoming a better ally, as an individual and organization!

Having knowledgeable and supportive youth service providers/adults can positively impact LGBTQ youth health outcomes, including lowering risk of suicidality and increasing feelings of belonging. We hope that you will join us! Breakfast will be provided!
