Event description

Description

LGBTQ 201: Asking the Questions and Dealing With the Answers: Starting and continuing conversations about your clients' sexual orientation and gender identity.

Learning Objectives: At the end of the presentation, participants will learn to build on their existing knowledge of the LGBTQ community with an exploration of specific situations that can come up once you get past the first conversation on sexual orientation and gender identity and start doing the work.

This training focuses on helping providers build their skill set and comfort level in initiating conversations and encouraging client disclosure around the topics of sexual orientation and gender identity. It provides simple, specific suggestions that will help you have more open conversations about sexual orientation and gender identity with all your clients, and enter the information correctly on forms and in databases.

Participants will also learn how to address clients’ questions and concerns. Participants will practice asking questions and recording data within the context of a case study in small groups, and then record the data accurately on a sample intake form. There will also be time for questions/discussion. Handouts, resource guides and sample forms will be distributed to participants.

The provider training is designed for social workers, psychiatrists, psychologists, case managers, CASACs, mental health counselors, outreach and intake workers, peer specialists, and other health and human services providers.
