Description

This six-hour training will be an introductory level exploration of trauma and domestic violence in the LGBT community. After a review of terms of relevance to LGBT clients, the presenter will give an overview of issues faced by members of this population, including experiences of trauma and domestic violence.. Participants will learn skills to screen, assess and refer clients who are facing domestic violence and/or intimate partner violence (IPV). Case examples will be used to explore the application of skills.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER

John O'Brien

John O'Brien, PhD

John received his Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Michigan State University. He is currently in full time private practice in Portland, specializing in substance abuse, grief, trauma and gay/lesbian issues. In his previous professional life, he was a high school guidance counselor and worked at Spring Harbor Counseling in their Partial Hospital/Outpatient Services. In addition, he teaches courses at the University of Maine at Augusta in psychology and addictions. He is a Past President of the Maine Psychological Association. John is an EMDRIA Certified Therapist and Approved Consultant.


CONTACT HOURS

  • 6 contact hours for nurses.
    CCSME Provider Unit is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Northeast Multi-State Division (NE-MSD), an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
    Accreditation status does not imply endorsement by ANCC, NE-MSD or CCSME Provider Unit.

  • 6 contact hours pending approval by the Maine Board of Alcohol and Drug Counselors.

  • 6 Category I contact hours for Psychologists are provided.
    CCSME is a pre-approved sponsor and provider of Professional Education Activities for Psychologists.

  • 6 contact hours for CHES.
    CCSME is a designated provider of continuing education contact hours (CECH) in health education by the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing, Inc.

  • Certificate of attendance for 6 contact hours for social workers, licensed clinical professional counselors, and other professionals.

Certificates will be emailed to participants upon completion of an online course evaluation. No partial credit will be given.
