About this event

  • All LGBTQIA+ community, family, friends and allies ages 12-100+ are welcome.
  • No charge, thanks to our sponsors!
  • Please be sure to register in advance to receive the Zoom link.

The LGBTQIA+ community has a long rich history in the world, in the United States, and in our local communities. What better way to celebrate than to honor the people, individually and collectively, who have worked to make life better for us?

We are honored to bring you this free online event in which YOU can share your own stories, and the stories of people and events you have witnessed. If you volunteer to speak, you'll have a brief conversation with the True Story emcee, and then four actors and a musician will reflect back the essence of your story using movement, music, dialogue and song.

Your stories can reflect any aspect of our local LGBTQIA+ history:

  • Did you encounter bias or discrimination — and do something about it?
  • Were you a part of the first school GSAs established in our community?
  • Were you part of a local LGBTQIA+ social or family group in the 1900s or early 2000s?
  • Were you part of the first local gay/lesbian weddings?
  • Were you among the first openly LGBTQIA+ people to be elected to office?
  • Were you involved in the controversy about the school diversity bag—the case that went all the way to the Supreme Court?
  • Were you part of the #YesOn3 campaign to preserve civil rights for transgender people in public accommodations?
  • Did you participate in or witness the formation of LexPride and its early programming?

Come to share these and other stories—or come watch and celebrate important moments in our local LGBTIA+ history. After each enactment, the person who shared is invited to comment on whether seeing their story reflected feels true to their experience. This will be an event filled with creativity, warmth and insight as the actors strive to capture the heart of the stories we share with respect, empathy and creativity.

Following this event, Lexington Historical Society will help us begin collecting oral histories, photos, and other materials to document our history!

LexPride has enjoyed True Story Theater performances on many themes. At these shows, participants and witnesses often laugh, cry, feel connected to each other, and get fresh insights about their lives and community.
