Tomorrow’s City Today

An International Comparison of Eco-City Frameworks

 UK Workshop Series

University College London & University of Westminster

WORKSHOP 1

Taking Stock: Current Research, Policy & Practice in

‘Eco-City’ Indicators, Standards and Frameworks

Towards Sustainability? Towards Implementation? Towards ‘Best Practice’?

This workshop is jointly hosted by University College London (Bartlett School of Planning) and the University of Westminster (International Eco-Cities Initiative), as part of the Leverhulme International Network Tomorrow’s City Today. The collaborative research initiative, which involves eight partners globally, aims to compare and analyse conceptual, policy and practical approaches to urban sustainability through various indicators, standards and frameworks.

In this first of three workshops hosted in the UK in 2013-2014, we will take stock of recent developments in research, policy and practice across Britain. This will include reviewing recent research (from different academic perspectives) on the conceptualisation and application of indicators and frameworks for urban sustainability, and considering current policy initiatives as well as practical developments. An important aim of the workshop is to bring together researchers, policy specialists and practitioners with a view to building research capacity and encourage networking on the ground.
