Event Details

Technical skills are the strong suits of many engineers. How do you leverage them to reach your professional goals? The answer lies in combining strong technical skills with strong soft skills. But which soft skills do you need and how do you develop those skills?

This presentation provides answers to these questions by looking at how the system (Canadian organizations) responds to a disturbance (cultural differences). By comparing the unwritten rules of Canadian organizations with the unwritten rules in other countries, we isolate the elements needed to get promoted, manage risk and be successful. Participants will come out of this presentation with concrete, practical ideas that they can bring back to their work and work on in order to get to the next stage of their careers.

Lionel Laroche, Ph.D., P. Eng., Founder and Principal

Lionel worked as a Product Development Engineer at Procter & Gamble Canada for four years and as a Process Development Engineer at Xerox Canada. After that, he branched out into HR consulting and focused on cross-cultural training and coaching. Over the past 16 years, he has worked with over 50,000 people in fourteen countries. This work has enabled him to follow the careers of many professionals over time and therefore understand what makes some people successful while others are not.

Lionel holds a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the California Institute of Technology, USA and a “Diplôme d’ingénieur polytechnicien” from the École Polytechnique de Paris, France. He has written three books and spoken at over 250 conferences world-wide.

Caroline Yang, CHRP, CCP, Partner & Human Resources Consultant

Caroline has fifteen years of human resources experience working with multinational organizations in the technology sector in Canada and China. In her role as a human resources business partner, Caroline has worked with a diverse workforce and supported multicultural teams of highly skilled technical professionals in both countries. By comparing and contrasting the experiences of professionals in Canada and China, she has identified what it takes to succeed on both sides of the ocean.

Caroline graduated from City University of Hong Kong with a Post-Graduate Certificate in Business Administration and a Canadian International Development Agency training program at Simon Fraser University. She co-authored the book Danger and Opportunity: Bridging Cultural Diversity to Competitive Advantage with her business partner, Lionel Laroche.

It is Wings Night at the London Pub and with the purchase of a beverage, the Chapter will buy you a pound of Chicken Wings.
Friends are also welcome. Networking and socializing encouraged.
*Note: Please drink responsibly and arrange for a safe ride home
