Safety briefing

Every event at the range will begin with the following reminders.

Environmental Safety

Heat exhaustion and hypothermia are common concerns, but they depend on conditions. Be aware of the weather and prepare accordingly. Don’t waste a range trip by showing up dehydrated or improperly dressed.

Firearm Safety Rules

Review the four rules of firearms safety before arriving. We will also cover them as a group.

Range Commands & Jargon

Ensure everyone understands the terms we will use:

  • “Range is cold” means all firearms must be unloaded with chambers visibly open.
  • “Range is hot” or “Load and make ready” means everyone must be on or behind the firing line. Firearms may (and will) be loaded with live rounds—no one should be forward of the firing line.
  • “Commence fire” (or another designated command) will signal the start of a drill.
  • “Cease fire” can be called by anyone if there is imminent danger or injury. Upon hearing it, everyone must immediately stop shooting, unload their firearms, and make the range cold.

Firing Line Etiquette

Everyone must understand the 180-degree rule. Firearm handling and shooting should only occur on the firing line.

Medical/Emergency Procedures

Discuss what medical equipment each person has available. Every attendee should have their own IFAK (Individual First Aid Kit). At least one larger, more comprehensive medical kit will be available.

Frequently asked questions

What do I need to bring?

(1) Driver’s license or other photo ID (2) Comfortable outdoor clothing for the day (3) PPE (ear protection and eye protection) (4) Sunscreen, water, snacks/lunch (5) Any firearms and ammo you wish to train with

What if I don’t have a firearm?

Cottonmouth operates on a collective model—while you may not own a firearm, others are often willing to lend theirs. Notify me in advance ASAP if you will need to borrow a firearm. You must still provide your own ammo.

How much is ammo?

9x19mm ammo is sold at current market prices.

What if I need to leave early or arrive later?

I strongly recommend attending a full session to maximize the class’s value. If you must leave early, that’s acceptable—but do not miss the initial safety briefing, as it covers critical information.

What facilities are available at Ares Training Facility?

Ares has no indoor spaces. Portable toilets are available, but bring your own shade, chairs, or tables if needed. Cottonmouth will generally provide tables for gear.

Can I take this class without having taken Level 1, Fundamental Handgun with you?

It depends on your current skill level. Reach out to me at cottonmouthcollective@proton.me and we can discuss what class would be best for you.
