Programme Overview - Level 2 Forest School Assistant (6 credits) Awarding Body - Open Awards

Forest School is an inspirational process that offers children, young people and adults regular opportunities to achieve and to develop confidence and self-esteem through hands-on learning experiences in a woodland environment. Training as a leader will give you the skills to plan, deliver and review quality learning and development experiences in a safe manner, using the Forest School ethos.  As a Forest School Assistant you will learn how you can best support a leader in this delivery.  You will receive training based around aspects of child and personal development, neuro-science, educational theory, woodland conservation, and assessing for risk to enable safe outdoor provision.

Who can apply?

The Forest Schools Practitioner Training Course is for:

  • Anyone in a facilitating teaching or mentoring role with all ages of children, young people or vulnerable adults.
  • Educators – teachers, teaching assistants, caretakers and dinner/break staff.
  • Forestry and countryside workers.

You don’t need to have achieved Level 1 to join the Level 2 course. We only require that you have had past experience in working with children in any work capacity.

What’s involved?

Full details of training content can be found at www.

Level 2 and Level 3 candidates attend the same five day training course in October. Candidates for Level 2 will receive the same content as the Level 3 candidates, but will only attend the first five days of training. At Level 3 the five days training will be followed by six months of personal skills consolidation, before the five day Assessment Course 19-23 March 2018. For both awards a portfolio is required.  At Level 2 this must be completed within 3 months of the training course.  At Level 3 it must be completed within 3 months of the Assessment course. With both awards there is a requirement to deliver sessions with children as part of portfolio completion.

Programme Facilitator

Richard Wood

Facilitator Bio

Richard Wood of Outdoor Learning in Northumberland Ltd has delivered learning and development opportunities for over 8000 children since 2006, through Forest and Beach School provision.  He has been delivering accredited courses as an Associate Trainer of Forest Schools Education and Archimedes Earth since February 2009, and was involved with the development of the Forest School Trainer award at Level 4 and Beach School Leader award.

Richard is passionate about the development of children and young people, something he has experienced close to home with his four daughters.  He enjoys the sense of achievement that can be gained from working with nursery and reception children, the adventures that can be had with primary children and the development opportunities that can be laid out for young people.  He takes particular pride in helping other adults to achieve wonders with children in the outdoors and enjoys running stimulating and exciting training courses that inspire and educate. His other strength lies in his understanding of the curriculum and his ability to use the outdoor environment in schools to its fullest potential. He has been involved in training at The British School in the Netherlands since 2014.

Richard’s outdoor leadership skills cover mountaineering, rock climbing, kayaking and surfing, and when not working in education he enjoys leading expeditions to locations such as the Amazon and Trinidad rainforests, Namibia and South Africa, and closer to home in Europe and the UK.
