Level 1: Complicated Grief
Fri, May 12, 2017, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM EDT
The Center for Complicated Grief's workshops focus on self-awareness, knowledge and skills needed to work with complicated grief (CG), a debilitating bereavement-related condition diagnosed as an adjustment disorder in DSM-5.
In this one-day workshop we focus primarily on how to identify and evaluate people with CG and how to facilitate natural processes of adaptation to loss. We also introduce participants to the principles and procedures used in Complicated Grief Treatment (CGT), the time-limited, targeted psychotherapy that has been tested and proven efficacious in three large NIMH-funded randomized controlled trials.
Through a combination of didactic content, experential exercises and group discussions, you will learn how to:
Evaluate the concept of psychological immunity (i.e. natural adaptive process) as it relates to loss and grief
Identify natural facilitators of adaptation
Analyze characteristics of acute and integrated grief and consider how they are related to each other
Identify impediments (i.e.”grief complications”) of adaptation
Conduct an assessment to determine if a client is suffering from CG
Recognize similarities and differences between CG, PTSD and MDD
Evaluate the approach used in CGT to resolve complications and facilitate the natural adaptive process
