About this Event

Level 1: Color Vowel® Basics Online

This 6-week course immerses you in the use the Color Vowel® Approach and our English pronunciation app, Blue Canoe. Through this course, you will master powerful, brain-based strategies for teaching learner pronunciation, vocabulary development, and oral fluency.

Participation involves taking part in a series of live webinars and completing targeted video-based practicum tasks in which you post videos of yourself demonstrating the techniques you have learned. You will receive personalized feedback on each assignment through written comments and video feedback.

This course is appropriate for English as a Second/Foreign Language (ESL) and English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers and pronunciation/accent coaches who are partnering with Color Vowel/ELTS and Blue Canoe®.

Learning Objectives

  • Discover how the human brain processes second language speech and why long-lasting pronunciation improvement requires the use multi-modal, brain-based instructional strategies;
  • Explore phonemic stress as the central organizing feature of comprehensible spoken English;
  • Use the Color Vowel Chart as a visual organizer for words and phrases, providing learners with a powerful tool for pronunciation, vocabulary development, oral fluency, and speaking confidence;
  • Master essential Color Vowel® instructional techniques: modeling, kinesthetic signaling, categorization, acoustic flooding, anchoring, and rhythm practice;
  • Learn how to maximize the power of Blue Canoe® with your students to accelerate their pronunciation improvement.

Course Schedule

Our weekly live meetings will take place on:

  • Wednesday, October 28: 8-10 pm ET (New York time zone)
  • Wednesday, November 4: 8-10 pm ET
  • Wednesday, November 11, 8-10 pm ET
  • Wednesday, November 18, 8-10 pm ET
  • NO CLASS on November 25
  • Wednesday, December 2, 8-10 pm ET
  • Wednesday, December 9, 8-10 pm ET

Participation: Live Sessions with Asynchronous Options

Each week's session is delivered live/interactively and recorded for replay in case you cannot attend one or more of the live meetings. This course is designed as a synchronous (live) course but may be completed asynchronously (by watching recorded meetings) as long as you are prepared to keep up with the weekly recordings, participate in our asynchronous course chat, and submit all assignments in a timely manner. Each week's assignment is due 48 before the next live meeting.

Course Materials and Assignments

  • Receive a digital copy of our book, The Color Vowel Approach;
  • Receive access to the Blue Canoe app (1 teacher license);
  • Access a recording of each week's session (for reinforcement or in case you have to miss a meeting);
  • Complete weekly video-based assignments through FlipGrid and Google Docs.
  • Receive personalized feedback from a Color Vowel Teacher Trainer.

Technology Requirements for this course

You will need a Google account (gmail account) To benefit from this course, you will need access to high-speed internet, and a video-equipped computer, and a mobile device for filming yourself. We will use Zoom software for our live meetings and FlipGrid as our video platform (where you will upload technique demonstration videos, comment on others' demonstration videos, and receive feedback from your instructor). It is advantageous to have a Google account as an easy means of accessing the course syllabus, submitting assignments, and signing in to FlipGrid.

I'm not currently teaching or tutoring. May I still take this course?

Yes. Level 1 course and certificate requirements involve demonstrating the techniques taught in the Level 1 workshop and do not require a current classroom setting. This course is appropriate for practicing instructors as well as those who are not currently teaching or who are preparing to teach.
