Event description

Description

Letters from Baghdad, a documentary film about the life of Gertrude Bell directed by Sabine Krayenbühl and Zeva Oelbaum tells the extraordinary and dramatic story of Gertrude Bell, the most powerful woman in the British Empire in her day. She shaped the destiny of Iraq after World War I in ways that still reverberate today. More influential than her friend and colleague Lawrence of Arabia, why has she been written out of the history she helped make?

All funds raised from this event will support our highly successful Visiting Iraqi Scholars programme that fosters scholarly exchange between Iraq and the rest of the world. The devastation and chaos of recent decades have severely limited opportunities for engagement between Iraqis and the wider scholarly community. Our programme is designed to contribute to allowing that dialogue to flourish once again. For more information on the programme visit our website or contact the Administrator on email: bisi@britac.ac.uk or tel.: +44 (0)20 7969 5274

The film screening will be followed by a reception.

We are grateful to the film’s UK distributor Verve Pictures for supporting this BISI screening.
