Description

"Let's Work Pledge: Fair Hiring Employer Summit" is a conference that aims to educate employers about the benefits of fair hiring - both to their business and to the local community. We're focusing on reducing barriers to employment for formerly incarcerated individuals through changing hiring policies to be more inclusive; for example, by not conducting background checks until late in the hiring process.

Employers - business owners, hiring managers, human resource professionals, and more - are encouraged to attend to learn about the Let's Work Pledge and how they can better serve our community as fair chance employers.

Background:

In 2014, Supervisor Keith Carson launched the Let’s Work Initiative to recognize the importance of a diverse workforce in Alameda County. The initiative celebrates employers who hire people with barriers to employment. Now, all employers in the County can take the Let’s Work Pledge to enact fair hiring policies for people who have been incarcerated or have a conviction history.

One in four adults in Alameda County has a criminal record, which reduces their likelihood of getting a job offer or callback by nearly 50%. When almost 80% of employers conduct background checks, it can be nearly impossible for the formerly incarcerated to find work. This creates a public safety issue, as unemployment is the number one cause of reoffending. It’s also an economic issue, as our economy loses money because of the reduced output and spending of people who can’t find jobs. The community also must spend more dollars keeping citizens behind bars.

Together, we can solve this problem.
