Event description
A quick, FUN, evening dialogue session for youth (30 and under) to share your thoughts on what you'd like transit to look like in 2050!

About this Event

What: Come together for a quick, FUN, evening dialogue session to share your thoughts on what you'd like transit to look like in 2050, and what needs you imagine yourself and your community having that Translink should prioritise.

Why: You're young. You're hip. You're cool. You will also be paying taxes by (if you aren't already) 2050 that directly impact transit and transit decisions. So isn't it only fair that you, at the bright, young age of you, also have a fair say in what Translink does, or doesn't fund? I know 2050 sounds like a wildly far away time - and it is! - but if we want to build a good, equitable, just transit system, we need to start thinking now. No idea is too wacky - think robots and self-driving buses, and no idea is uncool.

More of the why: Fun fact - the last time Translink did such a large-scale engagement such as this one (T2050), was in 1993. This means some of the architecture and infrastructure we see in transit today was suggested more than 25 years ago - long before reusable straws were being argued about, and waaay long before a Canadian won the US Open!

Who is this for: This is for anyone who idenfities as a youth under 30 years of age. Think about it - you want people LIKE you and younger than you to engage NOW, because in 2050 (which is 30 years away), because we'll be 60 then, and needing/using transit in a very different way.

What's your stake in this Abeer?: TransLink has provided funding to CityHive to support Youth engagement for the Transport 2050 project. I am a member of the CityHive led Youth Advisory Council, and do not work for or speak on behalf of TransLink or CityHive. I'm volunteering my time for this council because I believe the voices of my communities, specially those of marginalised folks, need to be heard and designed around when we're considering better transit systems for the future.

Where: Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House, 800 East Broadway, Vancouver, unceded Coast Salish territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and səl̓ilwətaɁɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.

Accessibility info: There are gender-neutral washrooms in the space, and the space is accessible for folks using wheelchairs; the space is also largely scent-reduced. The neighbourhood house is along the #9, #99 B-Line and #8 bus routes, and is about a 15-minute walk from the Commercial-Broadway SkyTrain. If you need childcare in order to be present for this dialogue, please get in touch with Abeer.
