Event description

Description

'Let's Start the Conversation' workshop will be an active and challenging session on our own positions in systems of oppression and how we can use our privilege to empower and make space for others, in particular for people of colour, trans people and Muslims.

This session will look at barriers, what happens when we don't start the conversation, inclusivity and how we can fight Islamophobia, anti-blackness and transphobia.

The workshop will be led by activist and writer Sabah Choudrey. Sabah is a queer Muslim social justice fighter and currently works with METRO Charity, Gendered Intelligence in London doing Trans Youth Support Work and sits as an Advisor with Inclusive Mosque Initiative. Sabah has been published on The Huffington Post, Black Girl Dangerous and she delivered a talk on TEDx in Brixton 2015 sharing their experiences of being a hairy brown girl, an angry brown man and a queer brown person.

The workshop, from 4.00 to 6.00, is free but places are limited. From 6 to 7 pm, there will be a Round-Table open to anyone who’d like to discuss how we can improve the experience of our LGBTQI+ community at LUU and the city of Leeds. The LGBT+ MAPPING PROJECT | 2018 will be our starting point for discussion.
