Event Information
Description
Overview
Learn how to sketch-note a tech talk in this relaxing, byte-sized session with 30 minutes of sketch-noting instruction by sketch-noting and graphic facilitation expert, Kate Rutter. Sketch-noting instruction will be followed by a lightning talk, "Why AI Thinks You’re a Toaster (and Why You Should Care)" by IBM Watson engagement lead, B Cavello for some sketching practice.
Lightning talk abstract
Why AI Thinks You’re a Toaster (and Why You Should Care)
Computer vision capabilities are opening up a wide world of possibilities from accessibility tools to AI diagnostics to self-driving cars. While the potential benefits are great, so are the risks. Fatal flaws in the architectures of these powerful computer vision systems make them possible to trick and confuse. B Cavello gives you a crash course in the convolutional neural networks that power modern computer vision and the “adversarial attacks” that break them.
Bios
B Cavello is an aspiring-polymath and activist. They work as an Engagement Lead in IBM's AI division, the Watson Group. Prior to IBM, B was on the original team for Exploding Kittens as well as worked on Montessori-style toys for teaching code without a computer.
Kate Rutter is an enthusiastic sketchnoter, graphic facilitator and a lover of all things sketchy. As principal at Intelleto, she helps companies deliver better experiences through collaborative visual methods and user-centered design. She teaches interaction design at the California College of the Arts and believes that sketching is the engine of curiosity, that sharpie pens smell like ideas, and that any group of collaborative and optimistic people have the power to change the world.
Marlena Compton is a software developer, writer and collaboration artist. She organizes conferences such as "Pear Conf" and "Let’s Sketch Tech!" builds software, and introduces people to pair programming. Marlena’s agile hat-trick of working for IBM, Pivotal and Atlassian, has left her with a life-long appreciation for quality code, empathy and working together with a team. Marlena enjoys writing about tech, sketching talks at conferences and sometimes giving talks too.
