Event Details

TEDxYouth@Homer is an experience, music, art, laughter, ideas, innovations, solutions, a concert, a conversation, a chance to mingle with thinkers and doers, artistic expression, social spaces for exchanging ideas. We have had environmental leaders, community art creators, chefs, musicians, and native elders speak live at our previous events; Thought provoking and spiritually uplifting.

The theme this year centers on the idea of individuals coming together to promote an idea in the world and how humans/animals “play” together. Let's Play is an opportunity for youth, adults, and children alike to come together and experience fun, laughter, and diversity.  We seek to engage the community in conversation about how they “play” together as a group, or individually.

We will have live talks from:

  • ·       Poet and national prize winning author, Susan Tweit
  • ·       A leader in the area of self-awareness and human potential, Amir Zoghi
  • ·       Youth poets, Brave New Alaskan Voices
  • ·       Film director, producer and author of Live In Wonder, Eric Saperston.
  •      An international hip-hop artist MC Lars

Interspersed amongst the speakers are performances by local musicians and singers, as well as pre-recorded TED talks: Bryan Stevenson, Cheryl Ang, and many more.

Come learn everyone’s style of playing, from exploring new places, to roaming through new ideas. Activate, play with, employ, and inspire your thoughts. Join us, July 26, 2012, for Let's Play TEDxYouth@Homer at the Homer Mariner Theatre 5-9pm

TED is a not-for-profit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. It started in 1984 in Silicon Valley to bring together people from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment, Design.  Since then its scope has expanded to include two annual conferences, an award-winning TEDTalks video site, and numerous awards and conferences around the world. Speakers at performances over the years have included the famous (Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Peter Gabriel, Jamie Oliver, and Salman Khan) and the fascinating, but not so famous (Jared Diamond, JR, Craig Venter, and Yann Arthus-Bertrand )

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx (where x = independently organized TED event) which are local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Over 2000 TEDx events have been organized in ….countries. TEDxHomer conferences are now in its fourth year and they have offered local speakers and performers the opportunity to present intriguing ideas, and have permitted speakers from Juneau, Sitka, Palmer, Canada, New Zealand, and Chicago to share fascinating insights withinsights with Homer audiences. At our TEDxYouth@Homer 2012 event, TEDTalks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group.

TEDxHomer Teens have won national competitions of Ashoka’s Technology for a Better World and Leaders Causing Leaders, a Jefferson Award, EPA’s Presidential National Environmental Award honor, Spirit of Youth, and Action for Nature,

TEDxYouth@Homer is a not-for-profit event organized by unpaid teen and adult volunteers. All ticket and sponsorship assistance goes directly to paying for expenses such as venue, catering, advertising, and other materials and costs that support the event.
