Event Details

Mahon with oil painting As a signature member of the Pastel Society of America and the Plein Air Painters of New Mexico and winner of the 2014 Santa Fe Plein Air Festival Paintout, Mike is the perfect instructor to advance your painting skills while visiting the Land of Enchantment. Painting Northern New Mexico has always been Mike’s passion, and there is no better time than September. Enjoy the unmatched scenic beauty, many art galleries/museums and unique architecture of this renown art colony.

You will discover how important and essential painting in plein air is to improving all your artistic skills, especially your studio work.

A Systematic Painting Process      Landscape pastel of Taos Mountain

You will be introduced to Mike’s DiVine Setup©, which is a 7-step systematic approach to painting based on classical principles of art which are logical, learnable, memorable. This systematic process will free you to be more spontaneous while still in control of your painting. You will learn the necessary steps and the order in which they must be taken to accomplish a good plein air painting and how to see in “aesthetic categories”. The paintings and photos you do on location will serve as great source material for studio paintings when you return home. Mike utilizes demonstration paintings, PowerPoint presentations, and personal instruction to help Landscape pastel of Taos Vistayou every step of the way to a more production painting experience. Each student will receive a comprehensive workbook that covers virtually everything that will be presented at the workshop. We will paint at a different scenic spot each day. All locations will be easily accessible and only a few steps from your vehicle with near by facilities. Mike will be working your artistic muscles not your leg muscles.

Registration

The workshop fee is $395.00 plus tax. You will have the option to pay the full amount now or put down a deposit to reserve a spot in the workshop. Once you register for the workshop, you will receive emails with additional information and a supply list.  On the registration page it will show the closing date for registration, after which deposits and registration fees will not be refundable.  Your registration fee includes a workshop workbook and exclusive workshop videos.

Mike Mahon

For more than 40 years, Mike Mahon has captured the essence of the Texas, New Mexico and Santa Fe areas through his landscape paintings and portraits. His works focus on the unusual and off-the-path scenes, catching slice-of-life vignettes in bright and vibrant colors in his impressionist style pastel and oil paintings.

Mahon has studied under several internationally recognized artists, including Ben Konis (pastel and oil), Kim English (oil), Judi Betts (watercolor), John Budicin (oil) and Albert Handell (pastel and oil). He also has past experience in fine art, commercial art and photography, as well as previous work as a film animator, all of which has given him a unique and versatile eye for expressing himself through pastel, oil, acrylic, watercolor and photography.
