WHEN: Saturday, December 8, 2018 from 8:30 AM to 1:30 PM

WHERE: Contra Costa College, 2600 Mission Bell Dr., San Pablo, CA

WHAT: This conference is designed for parents, staff, and students with disabilities, ages 14 and older, to learn and explore the landscape of post-secondary educational options including vocational programs, adult education, community college, university, and lifelong learning. Open to all, regardless of county residence.

COST: $20.00 Individual Registration, or $30.00 Family Registration (2-4 family members) Registration deadline is November 16th


SCHEDULE

8:30 – 9:00 AM: Registration and Refreshments

9:00 – 9:15 AM: Welcome - Katrina VanderWoude, Contra Costa College President

Following the welcome, attendees will have the opportunity to attend their selected workshops during each breakout session and to visit the Resource Area. Each session will last 70 minutes and allow time for Q&A with the presenters.

9:20 – 10:30 AM: Breakout Session 1

Session 1A “IEP Basics: Transition Planning as Part of the IEP Process (The Ins and Outs of the ITP)” Presenter: Caroline Ortiz, Director Emerita of Care Parent Network

Session 1B “Department of Rehabilitation Services and Effective Interagency Collaboration” Presenters: Raquel Ramsey, Student Service Coordinator and Work Incentive Practitioner with DOR and Cheryl Theis, Education Advocate, DREDF

10:40 – 11:50 AM: Breakout Session 2

Session 2A “Soft Skills for College: The Reality of College Expectations” Presenters: Ginny Richards, Manager of Disability Support Services, Los Medanos College and David Haggerty, Manager of Disability Support Services, Diablo Valley College

Session 2B “Financial Aid: Connecting with Resources” Presenters: Leticia Mendoza, EOPS Outreach Coordinator, Contra Costa College and Charles Ramirez, Lead Financial Aid Specialist, Contra Costa College

12:00 – 1:10 PM: Breakout Session 3

Session 3A “Hands-On Assistive Technology Demo” Eric Appel, Computer Laboratory Coordinator, Contra Costa College

Session 3B “Education and Training Options after High School” Presenters: Karen Lingenfelter-Carman, Program Coordinator for Adults with Disabilities, Mt. Diablo Adult Ed and Carolyn Murphy, Student Transition Specialist, Pleasanton Adult Ed

8:30 – 1:30 PM

Resource Room: Visit throughout the day to gather information about local programs and connect with members of the planning team.

Also in the Resource Room, Nikki Brown-Booker, Executive Director of Easy Does It Emergency Services, will share her perspective and provide tips and resources from hiring attendants to seeking accommodations in the dorm. Ms. Brown-Booker is a wheelchair-using college graduate who successfully negotiated and navigated living away from home, starting in her freshman year.


Register early! Space is limited to first 180 registrants. No walk-in registration accepted. Conference fee includes morning refreshments and all conference materials.
