About this Event

WEDNESDAY 30 OCTOBER

Multilocal 2.0 with Taiye Selasi

Renowned writer and storyteller Taiye Selasi gives an interactive masterclass on new forms of identity, community, belonging and solidarity in the European context. We will reflect on our own experiences and perspective as internationally connected, multilocal people, together with Selasi, in an interactive interview format.

The University of Groningen has an increasingly mixed (Dutch and international) student and staff body. At least a quarter of Dutch students will spend time abroad during their studies. As Selasi has previously noted, movement is becoming more and more the norm. But what and how can we, as internationally connected, multilocal people, do something with this experience of being, living, belonging in different places, apart from fill our Instagram feed? How can we understand and activate it, let it shape our identity, enable new forms of community and solidarity, so that we can become better citizens of wherever it is we belong?

This event is organised in collaboration with the University of Groningen.

PLEASE NOTE; THIS MASTERCLASS IS ON WEDNESDAY, NOT ON FRIDAY AS MENTIONED IN THE LET'S GRO BOOKLET

Together with Taiye Selasi - evening lecture

Acclaimed author and speaker Taiye Selasi gives a public lecture on TOGETHER: multilocal identity in a hyperlocal context.

In her TED talk from 2014 Selasi spoke about three conditions for being a local. Since then there has been an increase in mobility, and not just the refugee movement which dominates headlines. More and more of us study or work for sometime abroad; Dutch universities and workplaces are increasingly international. But importantly this doesn't only hold for cosmopolitan metropoles, it also holds in smaller peripheral cities such as Groningen, where regional identity and networks dominate.

Selasi will reflect on how the increasingly multilocal experience of her residents can connect to the hyperlocal character of the region; how the 'anywheres' and the 'somewheres' can engage with and shape each other. She will give an update on the conditions of being a local, on multilocal identity, ways of belonging and forms of solidarity, in a localised, regionally oriented context.

FRIDAY 1 NOVEMBER

BETTER TOGETHER Symposium

Seminar on internationalisation, diversity, social cohesion and social progress

In this interactive, interdisciplinary symposium we will try to understand and activate diversity for the benefit of the city through three perspectives: work, living, and city life. What are the current challenges that we know about, in the workplace, housing and city life?

What kind of city do we want to be? What changes can we make to become ‘better together’? Short presentations by our speakers will be interspersed with panel debate and plenary discussion. The morning will be moderated by Teun Gautier and our speakers are Floor Ziegler, Burcu Subasi, and Floor Groefsema.

The symposium is relevant for policy makers, researchers and professionals working in internationalisation, diversity, social cohesion and inclusion, as well as interested residents.

The insights and challenges arising from the morning symposium feed into an activity programme for the afternoon: the city probe and co-living workshop.

With the help of design methodologies, participants get the opportunity to connect actions to their dreams. How can our dreams become reality? Workshop What about co-living?

Curious what co-living has to offer? Or full of bright ideas on what the perfect co-living space in Groningen should look like? During this workshop we will discuss essential co-living themes, exploring potential residents’ needs, preferences and concerns.

The idea: designing a co-living space where locals and internationals feel at home. For locals, this space offers an upgrade from a student room without the need to settle down. For internationals co-living combines the benefits of temporary housing with being a part of a community.

Evening lecture with Saskia Sassen

Saskia Sassen, professor sociology at Columbia University and member of the Committee of Global Thought, talks about inclusive cities. She is convinced that we need new, smaller cities. 'In cities such as New York and São Paulo, people spend two hours on their way to work. That is pointless, bad for the climate and it costs employees a lot of energy." she says. "We have to go back to a situation where city centers have a strong center." (Source: Financieel Dagblad.)
