The Tom Karlin Foundation and the #ZeroReasonsWhy Campaign are grateful to partner for the "LET'S CONNECT! Teen Suicide Prevention & Mental Health Symposium" from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Friday, April 26, 2019.

  • 8:30 a.m. PLENARY SESSION: Welcome to Let's Connect + Data Sharing (Joe Karlin, Founder and President of the Tom Karlin Foundation, bank consultant and a small-business owner; Shana Burgess, MSW, CPP, Director of Prevention and Community Relations, Johnson County Mental Health Center)
  • 9:00 a.m. ROUND ROBIN: All in attendance share who they are and a bit about their work, what brought them to the symposium, and what they need/ are seeking/ can offer.
  • 10:00 a.m. PANEL: Teen Council / Johnson County Mental Health Convening (Share about the history of the Tom Karlin Foundation and the #ZeroReasonsWhy Campaign, as well as share the Teen Council Strategic Plan Presentation with Q&A + Discussion
  • 11:15 a.m. BREAK
  • 11:30 a.m. LUNCH
  • 12:00 p.m. PANEL: Moderator Joe Karlin engages teen, parent, educator, clinician, and community member panelists in a robust discussion about preventing teen suicide and mental health. Special Guests Kevin McGuire, LMSW, Mobile Crisis Response Team Leader, Johnson County Mental Health Center, and Tanya Hessong, LSCSW, Responsive Centers for Psychology and Learning, join the conversation.
  • 1:00 p.m. BREAK
  • 1:15 PM SMALL GROUPS: After a bit of background and instruction, attendees take a deep dive into the 3 Pillars of the Teen Council’s Strategic Plan: (1) Remove the Stigma (2) Commit to Education and (3) Build Community Support. You will have the opportunity to discuss what you think our community priorities and areas of focus should be now ("GO WE"), as well as those items you can commit to doing as an individual immediately ("GO ME") to advance and help accomplish the strategic framework of the 3 Pillars.
  • 2:00 p.m. SMALL GROUP REPORT OUT: Share and learn about what the collective thinks should be our community's top "GO WE" priorities and areas of focus. Hear from others and show what you think is most important. Share if you wish to personally help to deploy these efforts. Participate in Q&A + Discussion.
