Description

Training time requirement: The training will be completed over four days: October 8 & 9 and 29 & 30. To maintain the integrity of the LETRS training participants are asked to commit to attend all four days of the training.

Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS) Modules 1-3 Training:

Module 1: The Challenge of Learning to Read -explores the reasons why many students have reading difficulties and explains how children learn to read.

Module 2: The Speech Sounds of English: Phonetics, Phonology, and Phoneme Awareness -LETRS Module 2 introduces phonemes (speech sounds) and discusses the importance of phonological awareness in reading and spelling instruction. Module 2 also discusses the features of consonants and vowels, and addresses some of the problems that children, who speak other languages or dialects, may face when learning English.

Module 3: Spellography for Teachers: How English Spelling Works -This module explores the structure and history of English spelling from several angles: phoneme-grapheme correspondences, letter patterns within words, syllables, meaningful word parts (morphemes), and historical layers in the orthography.

LETRS is a professional development program that provides teachers with an understanding of:

  • how students learn to read and write
  • the reasons why some students fail to learn to read, spell or write
  • the instructional strategies best supported by research

Beyond the routines and lesson plans of their adopted reading programs, it's important that educators understand the language structures they're teaching, how students learn to read and write, and the reasons that some children fail to learn. LETRS (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) is a comprehensive, professional development that responds to the growing need for high-quality support for literacy educators. More than any other professional development curriculum, LETRS prepares educators for the challenging work of teaching literacy.
