As a Special Education Teacher, do you feel equipped to teach all your students how to read? Many Special Education teachers desire to learn more about the development of the reading brain and how to teach all of their students how to read. The Oklahoma Department of Education is providing special LETRS training to Oklahoma SPED teachers and Reading Teachers. Please see details below.
Training time requirement: The training will be completed in four days July 27-30 8:30am-4:00pm. To maintain the integrity of the LETRS training participants are asked to commit to attend all four days of the training.
Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling-LETRS Foundations introduces educators to the concepts and practices supported by reading science. It also prepares teachers for the more rigorous, in-depth modules of the overall LETRS professional development program.
Crafted for the adult learner, this module addresses the differences between good and poor readers; aspects of language that are important for literacy; the components of effective instruction; principles of systematic, explicit instruction in each component; and instructional activities that can support the implementation of any comprehensive core reading program.
LETRS Foundations is full of engaging activities, exercises for practice and review, and explicit connections to the classroom. Selected videos from Teaching Reading Essentials reinforce and support the lessons in the program
Material requirement: LETRS Foundations: An Introduction to Language and Literacy Manual and Video CD While the training is provided at no cost, the material cost is $47.95 for the Foundations book with the DVD of videos. Please order 1 book for each participant at
and have each participant bring the book with them to each training date. It takes about a week or more to receive the book once it's been ordered. The Oklahoma State Department of Education is paying for a National LETRS trainer to provide the training.
This training will qualify a teacher to teach Summer Reading Academy.
By participating in this professional development, you will be asked to take a pre and post test so the OSDE literacy team may track the growth in teacher knowledge gained from the training.
