Our fall expedition is focused on the concept of courage, both as an inside trait and by examining the lives of courageous leaders around the world. As a culminating exhibition, our 3rd grade team worked with a local musician to create an original musical that highlights the lives of 6 national and international leaders: Susan B. Anthony, Mahatma Gandhi, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Mother Teresa, Nelson Mandela and Malala Yousafzai.
The original musical we are producing integrates the Arts with literacy and Social Studies, and gives the students an authentic purpose to drive their learning.
Experiences such as these enhance learning and ignite passion in our students.
Performing our musical at a community music school gives the students an opportunity to be present in the community, and share their learning in the real world, all the while demonstrating courage to prepare and participate in a musical. Seven songs and an original script have been crafted to enhance this project, with the hope that the experience the students have will stay with them for the rest of their lives.
Proceeds from this musical performance will benefit Building Minds in South Sudan and future Third Grade Expeditions at Discovery Charter School.
