Event description

Description

Meditation is used today for all sorts of very helpful, but limited purposes.

From a Buddhist perspective, calm abiding (or shamatha) meditation can have a much more profound impact, freeing the mind to experience each moment in a fresh, uncontaminated way. But our ideas about meditation – including those about healing and spirituality, proper technique, the time and place to meditate, even what it means to be a meditator - can also limit its transformative capacity and become impediments to the practice. Shamatha - properly understood - helps us release meditation from the boundries imposed by our conceptual mind.

Out of her great kindness, last August at Osel Ling Her Eminnence Jestün Khandro Rinpoche presented a wonderful intensive series of teachings on the approach to shamatha entitled Eliminating the Darkness of Ignorance. This weekend will include a review of the key teachings, discussion of the relationship between these and other approaches to meditation, a chance to ask questions, and time to practice shamatha with the mahamudra instructions Rinpoche provided.

These profound teachings and the instructions for practice are crucial for anyone -whether new to meditation or a long-term student of the Dharma - who wants to truly understand the power of Shamatha and Vipassana to free the mind.

You may think you know what meditation is, but that in itself can become an obstacle to meditation. Come find out why!

Please note: the Friday night talk is open to those not attending the rest of the program. If you are curious please come. $10 donation suggested.
