Event description

Description

More than ever, the future of the Amazon rainforest is at risk. Fires, oil fields, mining pits, cow pastures, and palm plantations will replace biodiverse ecosystems if indigenous rights and ancestral lands aren’t respected. However, there is a solution: Indigenous communities proactively defending their territories using new technologies and innovative legal strategies.

Join us for an evening of powerful stories from frontline indigenous leaders in the Western Amazon in their battle to protect their lands against resource extraction and deforestation. See results from frontline environmental defenders using new tech including smart phone applications, satellite imagery, and drones. Learn how indigenous leaders are co-designing and implementing solutions with ally organizations to defend their rights and protect their territory.

Featuring case studies from indigenous defenders working with Alianza Ceibo, Amazon Frontlines, Rainforest Foundation US & Digital Democracy

Agenda:

5-6: Presentation of Amazon Frontlines & Alianza Ceibo, featuring testimony from Nemonte Nenquimo, Emergildo Criollo, Sandro Piaguaje, Pablo Maniguaje and Mitch Anderson

6-7: Case studies of technology innovations from Ecuador, Panama & Peru, featuring testimony from ORPIO (Peru), COONAPIP (Panama), ECA-Amarakaeri (Peru), Alianza Ceibo (Ecuador), Rainforest Foundation US & Digital Democracy
