Event description

Description

Join the Fabian Society International Policy Group as we host the Ambassador of Colombia to the UK, H.E. Mr. Nestor Osorio, for an event which explores the lessons from Colombia’s peace process and the areas through which to strengthen the UK-Colombia relationship. In particular:

  • What contributed to the success of the peace deal and what can we learn from both the UK and Colombian experience of conflict?
  • How can the UK continue to support Colombia in the implementation of a sustainable peace e.g. in security, economics and trade?
  • What areas are there for greater collaboration between the UK and Colombia?
  • What lessons can the UK learn from Colombia in its implementation of the UN’s Sustainable development goals?

Speakers include:

  • Ambassador of Colombia to the UK, H.E. Mr Nestor Osorio
  • Lord McConnell of Glenscorrodale - Prime Minister's Special Envoy for Peacebuilding, 2008-10
  • Kirsty Brimelow QC - Head of Doughty Street's International Human Rights Team and Chairwoman of the Bar Human Rights Committee of England and Wales

Background

The 2016 Colombian peace deal, which brought an end to decades of conflict between the Government of Colombia and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), has been a much-lauded process the world over.

The UK provided long-standing support to the process, a key pillar of its bilateral relationship with Colombia, and continues to seek opportunities to strengthen this relationship.

Many lessons can be drawn from the UK’s experience of Northern Ireland and Colombia’s recent process and provide a model for the resolution of on-going conflict elsewhere in the world. Colombia’s emphasis on peace as an integral part of sustainable development, and the UK’s support for trade and investment as well as science, education and security and justice in the country are all elements which have contributed to and will continue to benefit the process. This has included the announcement of significant funds through the UK’s Conflict, Stability and Security Fund and Prosperity Fund and the introduction of a Trade Envoy and Double Taxation Agreement.

Following the State visit of President Santos in 2016 and the first Congress of the newly formed Revolutionary Alternative Forces on Colombia, the newly created civilian political party of the FARC, we wish to explore the lessons learned from the peace process and the future of UK-Colombia collaboration.

Format

The event will take the form of a panel session with opening remarks from our speakers and an opportunity for audience Q&A.
