A Brief History of Les Misérables on Stage
Les Misérables began its life on stage in 1980 as a French-language concept album written by composer Claude-Michel Schönberg and lyricist Alain Boublil. The recording’s success led to a full Paris production the same year, directed by Robert Hossein. Though initially met with mixed critical response, audiences embraced its emotional power.
In 1985, producer Cameron Mackintosh commissioned an English-language adaptation. With English lyrics by Herbert Kretzmer and direction by Trevor Nunn and John Caird, Les Misérables premiered at London’s Barbican Centre. The production transferred to the West End’s Palace Theatre later that year, quickly becoming a worldwide phenomenon. Its sweeping score, epic storytelling, and revolving stage became defining features of modern mega-musicals.
The Broadway premiere followed in 1987, earning eight Tony Awards and cementing the show’s status as one of the most successful musicals of all time. Over the decades, Les Misérables has been staged in more than 40 countries and 22 languages, continually reaching new generations.
A major 25th Anniversary Tour in 2010 introduced updated orchestrations and redesigned staging, influencing subsequent revivals. Today, Les Misérables stands as a cornerstone of musical theatre, celebrated for its stirring themes of justice, resilience, and hope.
