Description

“Les Flamboyants de Kaliurang: Discussion on Indonesia, Now and Then”

This auto-fiction is based on the life of a young Belgian agronomist working in Indonesia during the Suharto period (75-83). The reader will accompany the main character of the story through his discovery of life on Java, expeditions in the tropical forests of the outer islands, risky adventures during volcanic eruptions and an extensive period of study of local rice cultivation systems. In addition, strong sentimental ties with a Javanese girl reveal unexpected insights into the Javanese society. Throughout the book, the author attempts to share the warm sense of brother/sisterhood which he experienced during that extended period in Indonesia.

Let’s discuss with Jean Malingreau how Indonesia has evolved since that difficult period when freedom of expression was refrained, infrastructure was lacking, poverty was rampant, security was not always assured and communications were very reduced.

Let’s discuss Indonesia and what it was like in late 1970-s and early 1980s. Jean Malingreau, a Belgian scientist, traveled and explored Indonesia and discovered the love of his life. All narrated in his fictional book Les Flamboyants de Kaliurang.
