Event description

Description

Tickets are $6 in advance (choose your seats). Remaining tickets are free at the door, beginning at 6:00 pm on the day of the concert. (This performance is rescheduled from the original March 30 date.)

Immerse yourself in this full-length performance of the classical Chinese music-drama Legend of the Jade Hairpin by China’s leading kunqu troupe. The presentation will feature eight actors in lavish costumes and makeup, as well as live music by a seven-piece traditional ensemble and English and Chinese surtitles.

Written in the sixteenth century, Legend of the Jade Hairpin is a love story about a young scholar and a Taoist nun who are betrothed as children, separated by warfare, and unknowingly reunited at a monastery. The drama became a staple of entertainment in the sophisticated courts of China’s emperors and empresses for three hundred years.

The Shanghai Kunqu Troupe has toured in Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, France, Denmark, Germany, and the United Kingdom and hasn’t appeared at the Smithsonian since 2013. Presented in cooperation with the Wintergreen Kunqu Society and in conjunction with Empresses of China’s Forbidden City, 1644–1912.
