"A friend of mine said something powerful at his grandfather's funeral. He said that the greatest lesson from his grandfather's life was that he died empty, because he accomplished everything he wanted, with no regrets. I think that, along with leaving a legacy, would be the greatest sign of success." --Marvin Sapp

Who do you know that's lived a truly unbelievable or admirable life? All of us have veterans we are grateful for, mentors we've looked up to, elders whose advice we've appreciated, or best friends who inspire us on the daily. If you had to pick someone to interview and write about, who would you pick?

Maybe this person--your idol--is too old (or has advanced dementia, or has already passed away) to write his/her life story. Maybe they're uncomfortable with the thought of being in the spotlight. Maybe they're a child yet, and you want to capture their funniest phrases and most vivid dreams. What research avenues can you explore, and how do you know which questions to ask when preserving someone else's legacy?

This three-hour workshop will teach you to:

  • understand the difference between a life review and creative nonfiction

  • appreciate contemporary examples of legacy writing

  • brainstorm and categorize interview questions

  • incorporate 'facts, quotes, and anecdotes'

  • recognize and utilize the different types of recording and transcription equipment available

  • begin writing a loved one's life story

  • hold yourself accountable to writing

  • self-publish his/her story

This workshop also includes a free copy of Jess's book POSTMARKS ON OUR FOREHEADS: HOSPICE CARE PATIENTS, MEMORY CARE PATIENTS, AND THE PEOPLE WHO LOVE THEM.

Jess will provide OJ and snacks. Let's do it already! (And have fun!)
