LEED-HC: LEED for Healthcare

Are you ready for LEED for Healthcare? In this program, Sharon and Cathy present an overview of the new LEED for Healthcare (LEED-HC) rating system. Also, get a chance to tour the Mountain View Center of the Palo Alto Medical Foundation to experience sustainable building elements, firsthand.
Course objectives include:
- Identify some of the unique challenges and opportunities associated with green healthcare design
- Describe the development background of LEED-HC
- Comparison of similarities and differences between LEED for New Construction and LEED-HC
- Summary of some of the new + modified credits associated with LEED-HC.
Sharon Refvem, Senior Associate, Hawley Peterson Snyder & Director, HPS - Sustainability Resource Group
Ms. Refvem is a Senior Associate with Hawley Peterson Snyder and Director of the HPS - Sustainability Resource Group. She has served as Project Architect on several of the firms’ projects, including projects for the City of Santa Clara, the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, the Palo Alto Medical Foundation, and the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation which was the first LEED® Gold rated building in California. She was the Project Architect and LEED Administrator on the LEED Platinum, Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation project. She also provides green building consulting services to the City of San Jose, as well as other cities, organizations and architectural firms, in addition to volunteer efforts for sustainability related groups in the community. Ms. Refvem also offers planning and facilitation services for community stakeholder meetings and charrettes. Before joining HPS, she practiced architecture and taught at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich, Switzerland. She is a founding member and past President of the U.S. Green Building Council's Northern California Chapter (NCC) and acted as adviser to those forming the now robust branch of the USGBC-NCC in the Silicon Valley.
Cathy Shields, Senior Interior Designer, Hawley Peterson Snyder
Ms. Shields is a Senior Interior Designer with Hawley Peterson Snyder and an integral member of the HPS Sustainability Resource Group focusing on sustainable strategies and LEED. She manages the implementation of sustainable solutions throughout design and construction. This includes coordinating with clients, consultants and the design team, researching healthy building materials, and documenting LEED credits. She has eighteen years of experience in interior design and project management primarily in the fields of healthcare and sustainability. Her current research focuses on healthy building materials and methods for eliminating the use of toxic chemicals in the built environment. Ms. Shields’ past and current projects include medical office buildings, corporate offices, research labs, and schools. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Interior Design from Florida State University. She is a LEED AP BD+C, participates on the GreenBuild 2012 Host Committee, and volunteers with the Healthy Building Network.
